Help Me Understand

I don’t have a war blog, nor do I want one. However, I am confused. For those who believe we should leave Iraq

We are where we are. In other words, even if you didn’t want us to get involved, we are now. So accepting that reality, what are we to do? Should we literally abandon our investment in the country and its people and leave as quickly as possible? What sense does that make (and we live in a real world, so your answer cannot possibly depend on “we didn’t ask to go in the first place” as this has already taken place).

If we are to leave, how soon should we leave? Should it literally be tomorrow – as fast as we possibly can? Should we wait until Iraqis can handle their own security? Should we wait until they have a very solid military, political, and economic situation? Should we say, 6 months and then let the chips fall where they may?

I honestly don’t understand the people who feel that we should leave Iraq very soon.

I think part of it is that we don't seem to be gaining anything by staying. Are fewer civilians being bombed? Is the power staying on more often? Are criminals being rounded up, and have the kidnappings slowed down? Do parents trust the security situation enough to let their daughters walk to school?

The president keeps talking about the money being spent to fix up Iraq, but last I checked, over 90% of that money was going to security services to protect the people we hired to fix things--very little of it gets spent on actually fixing anything. And very little of the money he talks about is even being spent in the first place.

If we leave tomorrow, we leave a real mess--but will staying an extra year or 10 make the place less of a mess? I'm not sure.
